3D is the next big thing in home entertainment, and is everywhere in trade shows like CES 2010, but dont get carried away, there are a few things you need to know before you go shopping for a 3d tv. Most 3D TVs currently on the market require the use of 3D glasses, or "shutter glasses". Also, 3D movies and other 3D content is not that plentiful at the moment, depending on what type of content you are into.
This is gradually changing though, with the box office success of "Avatar" more 3d movies are being released all the time and 3D TV channels are being launced internationally. You will definitely need a new TV (or 3d monitor if you want 3d for stereoscopic PC gaming), as there is currently no way to convert a regular HDTV to 3d TV functionality.
When purchasing a 3D screen you should decide beforehand if you need a "3D monitor" or a "3D TV".
They both perform some of the same functions and have some features in common, but each is optimized to its purpose. keep in mind what you intend to use it for the most.
The rule here is dont buy a 3D TV if you need a monitor, and dont buy a 3D monitor if you want a TV. Unless you are certain the unit you intend to purchase will satisfy your viewing needs, and has the features you require.
